COMPOSITION
It is a white-cream colored, bisect tablet containing 375 mg oxfendazole and 750 mg oxyclozanide per tablet.
PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
It is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic combination used in cattle and sheep against liver flukes, gastrointestinal nematodes, lungworms, and tapeworms.
Oxfendazole: A benzimidazole derivative anthelmintic. It inhibits fumarate reductase enzyme activity and disrupts energy metabolism in parasites. After oral administration, it is absorbed to a limited extent from the digestive tract and excreted via urine and feces.
Oxyclozanide: A salicylanilide derivative anthelmintic. It disrupts oxidative phosphorylation in parasites. After oral administration, it is largely absorbed from the digestive tract and reaches high concentrations in the liver, kidneys, and intestines. Excretion occurs via bile as glucuronide conjugates.
Oksavil Oral Tablet is also effective against larval stages of parasites at higher doses.
AREA OF USE/INDICATIONS
It is used for the treatment and prevention of mature and immature gastrointestinal and lung nematodes, liver flukes, and adult Moniezia spp. Tapeworms in cattle and sheep.
In cattle:
Liver flukes: Fasciola hepatica, F. gigantica (adult)
Gastrointestinal nematodes: Ostertagia spp., Haemonchus spp., Trichostrongylus spp., Cooperia spp., Oesophagostomum spp., Nematodirus spp., Strongyloides spp., Bunostomum spp., Trichuris spp.
Lungworms: Dictyocaulus viviparus (adult and larva)
Tapeworms: Moniezia spp.
In sheep:
Liver flukes: Fasciola hepatica, F. gigantica (adult)
Gastrointestinal nematodes: Ostertagia spp., Haemonchus spp., Trichostrongylus spp., Cooperia spp., Oesophagostomum spp., Nematodirus spp., Strongyloides spp., Chabertia spp., Trichuris spp.
Lungworms: Dictyocaulus filaria (adult and larva)
Tapeworms: Moniezia spp.
USAGE AND DOSAGE
Pharmacological dose:
Cattle: Oxyclozanide 10–15 mg/kg, Oxfendazole 4.5–5 mg/kg is administered orally
Sheep: Oxyclozanide 10–20 mg/kg, Oxfendazole 5–7.5 mg/kg is administered orally
Practical dose: 1 tablet /50 kg body weight
Tablets may be administered directly to the animal or dissolved in water. Tablets can be split at the bisect line if needed.
SPECIAL CLINICAL INFORMATION AND SPECIAL WARNINGS FOR TARGET SPECIES
Recommended to administer prophylactically twice a year, in spring and autumn.
Repeat the administration 1–2 months after the treatment.
Apply treatment before animals graze to prevent parasite infection.
Keep animals confined for 8–12 hours post-treatment to maximize ovisidal effect and prevent pasture contamination.
Administer medication two weeks prior to mating rams.
ADVERSE EFFECTS
Relatively low single doses (15 mg/kg) of oxyclozanide may cause temporary central neurvous system (CNS) and gastrointestinal disturbances (behavioral changes, diarrhea, anorexia) in cattle and sheep.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
When it is used with bromsalan, it may cause abortion in cows and death in sheep, so it should not be used with these products.
SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSE, PRECAUTIONS AND ANTIDOTE
High doses may increase severity of toxic signs (anorexia, depression, ataxia, recumbency, rapid breathing, salivation, spasms). Doses ≥50 mg/kg may be fatal. In case of toxicity, provide supportive treatment based on clinical symptoms.
WITHDRAWAL PERIODS
Meat: 28 days for cattle, 21 days for sheep.
Milk: 5 days (10 milkings) for cow. Not to be used in lactating sheep producing milk for human consumption.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
It is not recommended for animals with hepatic failure.
Use during pregnancy: Contraindicated during mating season and first third of gestation due to embryotoxic and teratogenic effects of benzimidazoles.
